Honoring an Indiana Legend
Revamped Pete Dye Golf Trail website
Amateur and pro golfers alike seek out courses designed by Indiana native Pete Dye. They know he makes great use of rolling topography and lines them with tricky bunkers. His courses are as breathtaking as they are challenging. Indiana is home to seven Pete Dye courses, and Indiana Tourism recently took over the site and initiated a new push behind the Pete Dye Golf Trail. The centerpiece of the efforts is a new website created on behalf of Indiana Tourism, which features each beautiful course and includes an interactive timeline detailing Pete and Alice Dye’s lives.
At the outset Williams Randall drew up site architecture that reorganized content from the old site for a more satisfying user experience. Site visitors can learn about the courses and see photos and can also follow a link to set up a tee time or book a hotel. Additionally, local information from the area such as restaurants, lodging and other things to do is included to help golfers plan their entire getaway.
Williams Randall established a design style that would elevate the prestige of the site—after all, it needs to reflect the renown of the Dyes as designers. One way to achieve this was to edit the photography so there is a consistent, almost dreamlike quality to it throughout the site.
The crown jewel of the site is the interactive story of Pete and Alice Dye. Site visitors can page through a timeline to see photos from throughout their lives, many captured by their personal photographer. As a site visitor interacts with the section, hidden nuggets of information can be uncovered. Another interesting feature is the site’s search function. When the familiar magnifying glass is selected, the whole page changes to a scene of rolling clouds over The Pete Dye Golf Course at French Lick. A hole-in-one as far as searches go.
Companion Site Also Recreated
We also created a companion site, VisitIndianaGolf.com, so that Indiana Tourism can have one site that includes all golf courses in the state. Site visitors can filter by price range and location to help narrow their selections. Golf courses can participate at varying levels.
